Vincenzo Foppa painted many versions of this scene, in which the Virgin nurses the Christ Child before an elaborately brocaded curtain set against a distant Lombard landscape. The intensity of expression, silver-gray flesh tones, and sculptural quality of the figures seen in this panel are characteristic of the painter, who drew on a variety of artistic influences during his career working across northern Italy.
